Biography:
A native of Newburgh, NY, Mr. Hodge became interested in art in the late 1950's while stationed in the Air Force in Okinawa. Working with leather was his first craft, then photography, and then stained glass in which he used depictions of African-American history. After his stint in the military, he returned to upper state New York where he was a social worker, taught emotionally disturbed children, and later was an Associate Professor of sociology and physiology at Duchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. When he officially retired, in reality Mr. Hodge only switched careers as he became interested in rug tufting winning many prizes in regional art exhibits. In February 2000 there was a very successful stained glass exhibition, "Clear Story" at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit, MI. After the Hodge exhibition, twelve works were purchased and by 2004 installed in a long-term exhibition at the museum. Mr. Hodge by this time had moved to Spartanburg, SC where he died in 2013.
